Woman wearing a navy blue skirt standing by suitcase

No matter which season it is, you need skirts as versatile wardrobe options you can turn to again and again. But which women's skirts will look best on your figure and work for many different occasions? This guide lists the top 5 women's skirts you should have in your closet for every event you attend.

Best Women's Skirts:

1. A-line skirt. Named for its slight resemblance to a capital A, the A-line skirt is universally flattering because it flares from the waist and camouflages a curvy stomach, legs and hips. Buy an A-line skirt made of cotton or linen for a great summer skirt and a classic plaid flared skirt made of wool or flannel to wear when the weather gets chilly. You're not limited to the traditional A-line shape, either. A high-waisted full skirt that flares slightly to the knees will give you a pretty vintage silhouette, while a flared skirt made of toile or a crisp taffeta is still flattering and offers a dressier look.

2. Long skirt. These skirts range in length and style, but a long skirt is a wardrobe staple because of its versatility. Look for light cotton prairie skirts with ruffled tiers for an easy-to-wear style during spring and summer or buy a long skirt made of lace panels that hits at about mid-calf for a dressier look. When you want a long skirt that's more appropriate for work, especially during cooler weather, look for straight skirts made of suede or wool you can pair with boots and tights.

3. Pencil skirt. For the office or a dressy event, a pencil skirt is a necessity. This style emphasizes the hips and bottom, as it hugs the body snugly from the waist down, and it looks great with a tucked-in button-up or dressy blouse. Buy a pencil skirt made of stretchy black fabric for a comfortable, classic look or add variety to your wardrobe with a brown satin skirt. Bow-tie waistbands and wide bands can add variety to the skirt as well.

4. Denim skirt. When you want a comfortable short skirt you can wear with simple tees and sandals around town, a denim skirt is a great option. Pick a length you are comfortable with, such as a fit that grazes the knees, hits mid-calf or falls a few inches above the knee, and then find a wash and color you like. A denim skirt in a dark indigo wash is especially flattering with heels and a ruffled blouse, while a short skirt made of distressed denim in a light wash is perfect with retro sneakers, a vintage shirt and colorful jewelry for a casual day of shopping.

5. Pleated skirt. If you want a traditional skirt you can wear to work, to church meetings and even to a formal occasion like a wedding, buy a pleated skirt made of linen or satin. For a prep-school look, purchase a full skirt in a plaid pattern with wide pleats that falls to the knees or just above them; add black peep-toe heels and a crisp white button-up for a classic '50s look. A pleated skirt made of silk or delicate chiffon is always lovely with a fitted blouse for a dressy night out.

How to Care for Wool Sweaters

Things You Need:

* Garment brush
* Stain remover
* Poster board

* Mild detergent
* Cotton cloths
* Clean towel

People have worn wool for thousands of years, especially in women’s sweaters. Numerous types of wool exist, so there are many different ways to care for the fabric. In general, wool is meant to be dry cleaned. However, in many cases it can also be hand washed. Brushing, stain removal and proper storage are also important aspects of wool sweater care.

Wool Sweater Care:

1. Remove soil and dirt from wool sweaters by brushing with a garment brush. Move the brush lengthwise along the sweater before and after each use for best results. Use a damp cotton cloth instead of a brush for men’s wool sweaters and women’s wool sweaters with a finer nap.

2. Treat stains on wool sweaters immediately to prevent setting. Blot as much of the stain as possible from the sweater using a clean cotton cloth. Do not rub, as this can force the stain farther into the fabric. Use a laundry stain remover formulated for use on wool according to the manufacturer’s instructions, or take the garment to a dry cleaner as soon as possible.

3. Make a stencil of the sweater’s original shape. Lay the sweater on a large piece of poster board and trace its shape before washing. When washed, wool loses its shape and must be reshaped while drying. A stencil will help you reshape the sweater correctly and prevent it from drying in the wrong shape.

4. Use a mild detergent to wash wool. Fill a sink or small bucket with warm water and add one or two tablespoons of detergent formulated for use on wool. Place the sweater into the water and gently squeeze with your hands for about three minutes. Do not wring or agitate the sweater but allow the detergent and water to penetrate its fibers.

5. Rinse the sweater thoroughly with cool water to remove all the detergent. Gently squeeze with your hands to remove any excess water and then place the sweater on a clean towel. Roll up the sweater in the towel to absorb any water.

6. Place the sweater on the stencil you created earlier. Pat the garment out to its correct shape and allow it to air dry. Never hang wool sweaters to dry or place them in direct sunlight. If you’re having trouble getting a sweater dry, aim a small fan toward it to expedite the process.

7. Brush sweaters thoroughly after washing and drying. Store in an airtight bag or container in a cool, dry place. You may also hang wool sweaters on padded hangers in zip-up garment bags, if necessary.

Tips and Warnings:

1.Wrapping paper or any other large piece of paper may be used to trace the shape of the wool sweater if poster board is not available.

2. Wash wool sweaters by hand once per season or whenever necessary.

3. Always check the label on wool garments before washing. If the label says “dry clean only,” do not attempt to wash by hand. You risk losing color, shape and texture if the garment has not been treated for washing. Take it to the dry cleaner once or twice a year, or any time it becomes soiled, to preserve the integrity of the garment.

4. Never wash wool sweaters in hot water, and never put them in a washing machine or dryer. Hang only on padded hangers. They retain their shape best if folded.

Tips on Buying a Pea Coat

When you want stylish women's coats that won't have you looking like the Abominable Snowman all winter long, try a women's pea coat on for size. These versatile ladies' coats come in many different colors and fabrics, and many pea coats also feature fun details, such as toggles, cargo pockets, wrap belts and oversized buttons. Read on for tips on buying a pea coat this season.

Buying a Pea Coat:

1. Choose a fabric. A women's pea coat is often made of wool, but you can find these ladies' coats in polyester, cashmere and cotton, depending on how heavy you'd like your winter coats to be. Purchase lighter coats made of corduroy or flannel for a great fit you can wear in autumn and look for coats for women lined with fleece or thick wool for wintertime.

2. Find the right fit. Most pea coats hit at about the hip, but some women's coats come in cropped styles that fall to the natural waistline or extend to about mid-thigh. If you live in an area with extreme temperatures, you may want to look for women's winter coats that cover your bottom and are a bit longer than traditional pea coats. Make sure the women's outerwear you purchase is also flattering on your figure. If you're curvy, you may want to buy coats that include a belt to define your waist. Double-breasted women's winter coats can fill out a narrow frame.

3. Pick a great style. The classic single-breasted pea coat has been a favorite for decades, but you can mix things up a bit with the following stylish coats for women. Buy a hooded pea coat to protect yourself from frigid temperatures and snow storms. Look for winter coats with funnel necks and pleated hems for an ultra-trendy look. Don't forget to buy a belted pea coat that also includes buttoned pockets and a stylish high collar.

4. Select the perfect color. Find women's outerwear in bold colors, such as cherry red or royal blue, to make a statement wherever you go or buy a hooded pea coat in black, grey, white or brown to complement your wardrobe. If you want a unique pea coat, purchase one in a traditional plaid pattern or look for a coat in tweed or houndstooth.
